“COVID-19 is not just a public health emergency;
it’s a housing emergency”
We have been hard at work over the past few months providing emergency relief to vulnerable members of the community in Hong Kong. Since the start of the outbreak, we have distributed over 30,000 products to more than 6,000 elderly families and 3 elderly residential care homes to help keep their living environments clean and hygienic. We are now ready to deliver a further 3,000 home hygiene kits to elderly families living in substandard housing and continue our cleaning and renovation programmes once it is safe to do so. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated cleaning products, masks and sanitiser over the past few months! Your kind contributions really do make a difference.
But we still need to do more. As Hong Kong starts to get back on its feet, we know this pandemic is not just a public health emergency; it is also a housing emergency. We also know from our disaster relief, recovery and resilience programmes around the world, the economic impact will be long-lasting and those living in substandard housing will be the hardest hit. Low-income families risk losing their homes and their livelihoods. We are committed to a world where everyone has a healthy place to live to contain the transmission of COVID-19, and is not forced from their homes due to economic hardships caused by the virus.
Please support our critical work here in Hong Kong. Now more than ever, we need you.
We are excited to share our newly designed newsletter with you. If you have supported Habitat and would like to share your story, or if you have read a report or article about the global housing crisis and would like to share your views, please get in touch.
Thank you!

“We are a part of the one percent that have been given a chance for education, a place to call home, and the freedom to choose our future. It’s our duty to give back to the community. Although the world is sometimes a cruel place, knowing that we have the power to make a difference makes the world we live in a much better place.”

“I’m not strong but I will fix everything myself! The wooden board at the door is to block the mouse from entering the room.” Grandpa & Grandma Wong are in their seventies and have been waiting for public housing for many years. They are currently living with six other families in a sub-divided unit with poor hygiene. The rooms are small and there are mouse trails in the corridors. During the COVID-19 virus crisis, they have been trying to clean their home more often, but it has been hard.
70-year-old Iqbal lives with his wife, three daughters and son in a hut just beside a railway track in Central - East Kolkata, India.
Iqbal lost his left arm when he fell from the train 12 years ago, and with this he lost his source of income as well. In normal times, the family struggles to make ends meet. The COVID-19 lockdown has hit them hard.
“I am very grateful for the provisions from Habitat. This help has been timely because it came in the greatest time of need when all hope was lost.”

Together, we build a better future
We would like to say an enormous thank you to all our donors for their generous support during these difficult times. With our fundraising events cancelled and critical sources of funding harder to access, our long-time supporters, Baker McKenzie responded immediately with a generous donation, helping us to sustain our operations and plan for the future. We are eternally grateful to donors such as Bloomberg and TA Associates for providing critical funding when we needed it the most. We have also received grants for our COVID-19 response programmes from Barclays, BNY Mellon and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, enabling us to support a further 2,700 low-income families in the coming weeks.
