Festive Greetings from Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong!
What a year! Where do we start our reflections? Let's start with the fact that we had a global housing crisis before the COVID-19 pandemic happened. We're now faced with a world where more than 100 million additional people have been plunged into severe poverty and the decades of progress that had made been, is being threatened every day. According to UN-Habitat, an estimated three billion people will need adequate and affordable housing by 2030. We can't stop our efforts - we need to accelerate them. We need you, now more than ever.
As we reflect back, it’s important to look towards the future with hope in our hearts and in our homes. In Hong Kong, instead of bouncing back, we will bounce forwards into a new reality, one where we will scale up our efforts to address the systemic issues that lead to sub-standard housing. Habitat will also focus on the root causes of inequity in the housing ecosystem and confront the barriers preventing families from accessing a decent place they can call home.
As you stay home this Christmas, with your help we can give the gift of healthy housing to low-income families in Hong Kong. In the spirit of becoming a life-long member of the Habitat family, we invite you to become a hope builder. Habitat hope builders are the monthly donors that provide critical and sustained support for the cause of decent housing. For as little as 100 HKD every month, you can make a difference. For every monthly donor that signs up during December, Turner & Townsend - a Habitat partner - will generously donate a special Christmas hygiene pack to a family in need. This means that your gift will go even further to give families hope and have a brighter 2021. Please click here to give this special gift this Christmas.
I want to say a huge thank you to all our supporters who have stepped up in 2020. We can't do what we do without you. Together we can help build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. Together we can build hope for a better tomorrow.
I wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

CEO, Habitat for Humanity Hong Kong
“I like to think of creative ways to solve problems for others. Each time we complete a home repairs project for Habitat, the residents express their gratitude in such lovely ways. Some of them shed tears of joy, some of them try to invite us over for a home-cooked dinner. Even though they don’t have much, they wholeheartedly offer us their best. It is these touching moments that motivate me to continue to help make homes better.”

“Very satisfied! They all did very well!” 90-year-old Grandpa Ng received our help in October. As part of our Project Home Works deep cleaning programme, two local domestic workers visited Grandpa Ng's home and helped him to clean the house and clear the rubbish. “I am too old and can’t handle housework myself. Thank you for helping me to clean the house. I don’t need to worry anymore.”
In November, we visited five districts and cleaned 57 homes for families living in public rental housing estates and other substandard housing complexes. Together, we can help more people in urgent need to keep their shelter safe and healthy.
Life for Setab Ali, 68, and his family has been full struggles for a long, long time. They have been living in their old, worn, and shattered home for their entire life. Setab used to be a day labourer, however, he had to quit working as his age does not permit him to be fit enough to work anymore. The home they live in is in a very poor condition and extremely exposed to hazards like cyclones and storms. Their poor economic condition, doesn't allow them to spend enough money to repair the home to be safe and secure during this monsoon.
We recently launched a disaster resilience improvement project in a southern coastal disaster-prone district of Bangladesh. Setab’s family is one of the 74 families to be provided a resilient incremental house with a sanitary toilet.
The best gift for Christmas
Thank you to mother and daughter author duo, Janice Lao-Noche and Esther Noche, for choosing Habitat Hong Kong as one of their charity partners with the launch of their children's book Sparky & Benny's Big Home Mystery. If you order it online, Bookazine will kindly donate a percentage of the proceeds to Habitat. Order now to find out why Sparky and Benny are worried about losing their home, and support a great cause at the same time.
